learning

I watched a documentary on photographer Tina Barney today and I was struck by the color and fabric in her photos/portraits. She said she hated the fact that so many people seemed to mention the fabrics in her pictures, but there it is - they are not just incidental, they dominate.

Another thing that I found interesting was the production that it took to get to the final image. The introductions, the phone calls, the pre-shoot meetings, the equipment set up, the wardrobe discussions, the printing, and printing and printing.... And just as Peter Beard also denied that his fashion photos were staged, Ms. Barney also felt that she didn't direct every bit of the scene. She produced beautiful portraits of the wealthy and privileged though!

And, no one smiled.
